The Superyacht Cup 2009 has a new venue in the heart of Palma, close to the Cathedral and within easy walking distance of the restaurants, bars, hotels and shops of this very cosmopolitan Mediterranean city. The new Superyacht Cup dock, located at Muelle Viejo, will accommodate around 22 yachts (depending on beam) and a specially-designed marquee will provide the focus for all the owners, crew, guests and sponsors to gather each afternoon after the racing.

The four-day event will open with a Welcome Cocktail Party on Wednesday June 24th, with racing on the following three days. The regatta closes on Saturday 27th June with the final Prize-Giving Evening, which will be held in the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, a stunning venue overlooking the harbour, yachts and City of Palma.

New rating system for Palma 2009

Image

Jim Teeters, founder of the 'Bucket Rating' system

An important development for the racing format will be the adoption of the 'Bucket' Rating System. Developed by Jim Teeters of US Sailing and used at the popular St Barth's and Newport Bucket regattas for the past few years, the data is continually being built upon and tuned to allow for the many factors influencing accurate ratings. The system was a great success at the Superyacht Cup Antigua, creating the closest finishes in 14 years of Superyacht Cup racing.

There will, subject to sufficient demand, also be an IRC class. The two classes will offer owners the choice of the most popular and successful rating systems for superyachts and produce the fairest and most exciting racing for everyone. Both classes will be able to benefit from more technical race-courses, which can be set according to weather conditions.
